RACSMEI – A Wellcome Trust Project
The RACSMEI project, led by Dr. Claude Flamand, Head of the Epidemiology Unit at Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC), has received the Wellcome Trust Discovery Award. This six-year initiative, starting January 2025, marks a significant advancement in Precision Public Health using a One Health approach. Focused on understanding pathogen transmission dynamics, RACSMEI aims to address infectious diseases at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. In collaboration with the Cambodian Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, and Ministry of Environment, the project involves leading research partners, including IPC (Virology Unit, Medical en veterinary Entomology Unit, Medical Biology Laboratory), Institut Pasteur Paris, Malaria Consortium, and CIRAD. Key features include a nationally representative One Health survey to study zoonotic and vector-borne diseases, research on priority pathogens like dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, avian influenza, leptospirosis, Hantavirus, and Q fever, as well as high-resolution risk maps and predictive models to guide public health interventions. The project emphasizes cross-sector collaboration and utilizes advanced tools like multiplex serology, metagenomics, and modeling to provide actionable insights into disease transmission.
