The Medical and Veterinary Entomology team described a new species of mosquito
Following an expedition in Rattanakiri, and Kirirom National Parks, the Medical and Veterinary Entomology team of the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge collected a new species of elephant mosquito. These mosquitoes were collected inside Nepenthes pitchers, an endangered carnivorous plant. Its larvae develops in the water held by the pitchers. Fortunately, these large-size mosquitoes (reaching up to 2 cm long) do not feed on blood!
The entomologist decided to name in Toxorhynchites domrey in tributes to the Khmer designation for elephants, called “Dom rey” (ដំរី in Khmer).
